Here’s what’s happening

Posted 25 August 2010

Real-life obligations necessitate that I rearrange my blogging activities a little. Really, I should’ve done this a long time ago. This doesn’t mean that worlds shall end and others shall be born from their ashes or anything; it just means that you’ll see posts of mine in different places than have been usual thus far:

  • Pontif.us will be relegated to various team and multimedia projects, i.e. Strike Witches (which will continue; we’ve just gotten behind on things, due to other things). I may also do very brief posts here occasionally. In short, this site will host weird things that don’t really belong anywhere else.
  • Longer solo posts of mine that aren’t super-critical will show up on We Remember Love, which is awesome 1. because it’s one of my favorite blogs and 2. because my posts will actually get better exposure there.
  • Super Fanicom will never change, though I do, miraculously, have some ideas for posts over yonder. Bear in mind, too, that SRS BSNS proceeds as planned, or will, if I get enough contributions from people.

Kyoudai + OGT vs. Broom Witches 2 ep. 3

Posted 29 July 2010

By the time you see this, dear reader, the three of us will be waiting in line to pick up our Otakon badges (albeit perhaps at different places in said line). Yay? And, hopefully, the presentation we’re meant to deliver on Friday should mostly be done by then. Hopefully.

Perhaps you’re in that line, too, even as you read this. In that case, I invite you to seek us out and bequeath your comments upon us in person.

Lamenting, lauding, and otherwise considering the loss of One Manga

Posted 22 July 2010

The sphere’s abuzz with news of the impending closure of One Manga, one of the more prominent English-language manga scan sites, and my personal favorite. But of course the sphere never buzzes at a single pitch.

Kyoudai + OGT vs. Strike Witches 2 ep. 2: Entrails

Posted 20 July 2010

Miyafuji/Perrine, amirite?

Which is to say, welcome to another installment of our most self-sacrificing of team features! This episode was kind of boring, I think. But fear not — such things have never stopped us before. And, anyway, if the next episode preview is to be believed, great things await us just ahead. We need only reach them.

Notes on rewatching Toradora! episodes 1-8

Posted 16 July 2010

As I remembered this show being incredible, and as it’s on my list of things to buy at Otakon, I figured I’d give Toradora! another watch to fill in what holes exist in my memory. And because things like random rewatches basically mean free blog content, I decided to take some notes as I watched.

Said notes ended up longer than expected, so I’ll have to split them into three parts. I invite you to take advantage of the lag time between posts to rewatch Toradora! yourself!

Kyoudai + OGT vs. Strike Witches 2 ep. 1: Mad panty science

Posted 13 July 2010

And so it continues.

We heft the cross of Strike Witches — a cross so weighty with teenage undergarments that even Zac Bertschy hasn’t energy enough to lambaste it thoroughly — yet again. But this time, we’ll have the aid of the stalwart OGT, who, being a sound strategist, seeks refuge in numbers.

Below, you’ll find my comments indicated by the red ani (兄) kanji, Otouto’s by the blue oto (弟), and OGT’s by — what else? — the green kame-o (かめ王).

Deeds done in the absence of internet

Posted 9 July 2010

Pardon my recent lack of connectivity. These things happen, I suppose.

But perhaps you might like to know what sorts of things I’ve been doing in my internet absence (still ongoing, at the moment). Yes, this is one of those posts, wherein the blogger simply provides a list of recent activities, but I’ll try to strain myself a bit and include some assorted thoughtful observations.

Interpretive strategies…in three distinct flavors

Posted 4 June 2010

I haven’t been doing much in the way of nerdy Japanese media consumption. This will be rectified next week, when epic readings will be filmed (belatedly) and Slayers will be…thonned, I guess. But, for now, I have some thoughts on how different fans choose to interpret things, which may (or may not) interest you.

Brocast 5/30/2010: Dying a good death

Posted 30 May 2010

Rejoice! After last week’s Brocast absence, we have regrouped and managed to produce something that might be somewhat interesting. If ever you were intrigued by classic JRPGs, dark tokusatsu shows, or Genshiken’s ridiculous meta strategies, I invite you to indulge in our most recent aural pursuit.

The many Minmays to my Hikaru (but who is the Minmay here, and who the Hikaru?): A selfish reading of that one love triangle

Posted 27 May 2010

Every once in a while, two lines of inquiry collide in my head, and the resultant reaction inevitably takes some sensitive tissue with it. The questions that led to today’s post were: 1. if fandom is socially constructed like the rest of our personalities — if fandom is indeed part of one’s personality, and not a “mere” result of hobby choice — which of our discrete attributes incline us toward specific branches of (specifically anime/manga) fandom, and 2. what does Hikaru Ichijou see in Lynn Minmay, anyway?
