Moment the Fourth: Nonoriri

[Read the previous moment here or start at the beginning]

A while ago, OGT recommended Gunbuster and its sequel to me as gateway shows into the super robot genre. I still have yet to really delve into the genre, but the Top wo Nerae! OVAs are now among my favorite science fiction anime, generally speaking.

Only video can convey these scenes adequately. Honestly, I cannot for the life of me choose between them, so you’re getting both. I’ll let you decide which is better. These are from the fourth episodes of their respective series, which have a lot in common — most notably the ability to blow your mind in four minutes or less.

Now, I’m not enough of a mecha fan to say that this is what mecha is all about. But I will say that this is what I look for in a mecha show — that is, equal parts over-the-top awesome and inspiring, with a little thought-provoking thrown in to keep things interesting. Gunbuster and Diebuster deliver that much and more, and the thematic interplay between them is another added bonus. Things like this remind us that we always need a little epic win in our lives, that we should go about our business with guts and effort and buster machines in our hearts, because there isn’t anything that can’t be done in a magnificent way.

I mean, maybe I’m the only one who gets that music that plays when Gunbuster emerges, arms crossed, stuck in my head when I’m pounding out an essay at the last minute, or on my way to do a presentation or an interview, or washing dishes. But I doubt it.

  1. LOL Don’t expect what made this interesting to be in the majority of Super Robot shows. The SF in those is decidedly superficial save for small pockets. I too recommend this show as a gateway into the genre against my better judgment because it will spoil viewers rotten.

    As for the moments you shared, I can only do an OGT and agree profusely with my arms crossed. I typed this response using my ahoge.

    What? There’s a whole imageboard of like-minded men!

    Gunbuster episode 4 has got to be one of the greatest payoffs in anime.

    The only thing I can do is blockquote because no truer words have been said. That music that plays when Nono does the Buster Beam Slice gets me every time.

    Yeah, I may have false expectations for super robot shows. I hesitate to dive into the genre partly because I don’t want to be let down. But I don’t know, I can deal with the SF elements being superficial as long as there’s enough going on otherwise. I was a fantasy fan before I was an SF fan anyway.

    True — and maybe someday I’ll be enough of a mecha adept to call myself a /m/an. I’ll need to watch Gundam first…(that’s my next big project anyway).

    @kadian

    Her speech is what gets me. “Distance is no longer an obstacle,” and all that.

  6. Getting started on Gundam?! FUCK YEAAAAHHHHHHHH

    While I obviously think Macross is more lovable, Gundam on the other hand is far more fascinating and ridiculously more interesting. Over on WRL it’s going to be a big year of Gundam faggerjackery so the timing of your foray is very good! ^_^
