About

My goal here (besides general screwing around, which abounds) is the consideration of anime, manga, video games, and such things as vehicles of story. A story is, as far as I’m concerned, several things:

  • Entertainment.
  • Something acted upon by consumers, and something which only means anything in the contexts of these individual acts.
  • An artifact necessarily based upon and in constant interaction with a group or groups of people.
  • An entry in one or more storytelling traditions.
  • A means by which worldviews and philosophies of all sorts are presented, weighed, and judged.
  • Difficult to describe using a manageable number of bullets.

As I edit this page once every few days, we might say that I have many goals, or none, but the consideration of stories as such (whatever that may mean) remains generally constant. This means spoilers are unavoidable at times, so tread lightly. And I use bad words, in case you wanted to know.

I don’t believe that “taste” can be good or bad, so you should feel free to comment with the understanding that I’ll treat you like a human being even if you disagree with me entirely — assuming you do the same for me, anyway.

Lately I’ve embarked upon several projects with my brother, the aptly-named Otouto-kun, most notably Pontifus and Otouto-kun vs. and the Brocast. I’m much funnier when engaged in sibling abuse.

As for me (i.e. Pontifus), I’m a grad student in English (MA) whose degree-and-a-half gives him a healthy taste for critical theory, but who inclines more toward the technical and practical aspects of language presentation these days; I’m a volunteer copy editor, and my MA thesis will amount largely to a web design project. I also write fiction, but nothing has come of that yet.

If you need to contact me, send an email to (superfanicom.{at}.gmail.{dot}.com), or catch me on Twitter, which isn’t difficult. You can also find me at MyAnimeList and last.fm. And of course there’s that other blog.

Most things here belong to me, excepting screencaps, quotations, and anything I specify isn’t mine. The header image is, for the time being, some official Strike Witches art by Shimada Fumikane. If you feel that I’ve failed to credit the creator of some bit of media adequately, let me know. Anything that is mine is made available under a Creative Commons BY-NC-SA license.
